Our Senior Citizens project

April 12, 2009

Desmos describes his senior citizen named Dot. This is what Dot told me about her early days.

Dot as a small child
When I was small I grew up with five children in my family. I lived in Johannesburg. My parents owned hotels for a living. When I was a child people had jobs like being a doctor or a farmer. The one thing that I remember the most in my childhood is a small town called Craddock. I remember loving to play with paper dolls. I liked to play netball and tennis in the garden.

Dot’s Primary School Days
When I was a child there were no computers in my school. I went to school in Johannesburg. I got to school by tram and the bus. At school I did subjects like Arithmetic and Geography. In our books we wrote in pen and pencil. The pens were dipping pens. If we were naughty our punishment was a hit with a stick if you were a boy, and if you were a girl you would be hit on the nuckles with a ruler. Ouch! We also had to do lots of homework. At break I used to play hop scotch and a ball game called Sevens.

Dot as a teenager
When I was a teenager girls wore mainly dresses. We had never even heard of cell phones, computers or calculators. At school I did ballet as an extramural. In my spare time I swam and read books. In the evenings our family would listen to the radio. I loved rock ‘n roll. I also liked to go to the cinema and watch love stories. My mom often made Oxtail which I loved. Kidney pie was another favourite. We liked to braai as well. We had a servant who helped us clean our house. I went on my first date when I was seventeen. A perfect date was to go to the cinema. I met my husband at my church’s youth group.

How has South Africa changed since Dot was a child?
One of the many ways South Africa has changed is with technology such as TV, DvD, cellphones and computers. We also never had highways when I was a child.

Does Dot have any interesting information about her own grandparents?
My grandmother came up from Durban to the Cape by ox wagon!

What advice can Dot give to help us in our lives?
Show respect to everybody.

Any herbs and remedies that were popular when Dot was a child?
We used Aloes for skin problems

Any other interesting stories you could tell us?
I have an interesting story to tell you. I lived on a dairy farm and I helped milk cows.

Sometimes I was naughty and I would climb over people’s fences and steal their fruit!

Desmond enjoyed interviewing Dot.

Desmond helped teach Dot how to blog

Dot loved the little keepsake that Desmond gave her.

Everyone was sad to say goodbye.
